It was never a choice of training the dog or not training the dog. It was a choice of loving my life or not loving my life”

If you’re reading this you’ll know there’s obedience, then there’s competitive obedience. You’ll also know competitive obedience is more than just a simple sport. It’s about connection, presence, teamwork, and commitment. There’s as many ways to experience dog sports as there are ways to tweak your heelwork!

I came to dog sports later in life. Growing up, I’d always wanted a golden retriever, and in 2006 I was finally able to make that happen. Little did I know the challenges this breed would bring!!

I had absolutely no idea what I was getting into when I enrolled on my first dog training course. What I did know was this: I wanted to learn everything I could about training my dog.

A couple of years later I discovered there was a thing called Competitive Obedience. I had no idea what Competitive Obedience was.

So I joined a monthly competitive obedience training group and discovered reward based positive reinforcement training.

And what a door that opened!

I started competing in Obedience in 2011, continued to grow my knowledge of all areas of the sport, progressed through the classes, and became an RKC Competitive Obedience Judge.

But it wasn’t until 2020 that I could really put all that I had learnt to the test with my first Working Golden Retriever, Berty. Needless to say I needed to sharpen my skills. I sourced the best trainers I could find and immersed myself in learning everything I could about training a dog at the top level.

I was fascinated by these trainers. Their awareness, their timing, their ability to be present, the way they moved, and the way they seemed able to look at a dog and handler and know exactly what was needed to make a difference to their performance.

5 years later I went on to qualify Berty to compete in the Competitive Obedience Championships, the top level of the sport, and I set up Wygulmut Competitive Obedience Training.

When I was considering what to offer, I realised something. I’m not really a dog training instructor. I’m a designer of experiences.

What interests me is creating situations in which we can observe ourselves, our dogs, and the insights that emerge.

This is one reason I deliberately seek out challenging experiences myself.

Training dogs pushes me beyond my comfort zone.

Not because I enjoy competing quite as much as some people imagine.

But because going to the edge teaches me things.

And if I invite others to explore their own edges, I believe I should be willing to do the same.

So for Wygulmut Competitive Obedience Training, my plan was to provide the best training experiences and facilities I could to enable owners not only to realise their dog sport dreams, but to explore together how we learn, how we influence our dogs, and how we sometimes sabotage ourselves.

If any of this sparks your curiosity, I would love you to join me.

121 training is in person and costs £45/hour or you can book a bundle of 6 sessions for £260.
